GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A new leader is at the helm of the University of North Dakota, for a little while.
Former North Dakota Gov. and U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer began serving as the school's interim president Friday.
Schafer will serve until a successor is named to former President Robert Kelley, who retired Thursday after nearly seven years at the school.
More than three dozen people have applied to succeed him. A search committee will whittle the field of candidates to 2-4 finalists and the state Board of Higher Education will make the final decision.
Schafer was governor from 1992-2000. He was the federal agriculture secretary from 2008-2009. The UND alum was a businessman before he became governor, working at a household products business founded by his father.
