PLAINVIEW, Texas (AP) — A West Texas university has conferred an honorary doctorate on former first lady Laura Bush.

The Plainview Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/1QVvdxl) reported Wayland Baptist University conferred the honorary Doctor of Letters degree on the former first lady in recognition of her longtime advocacy on behalf of education, health care, human rights and the family.

Bush was on campus to deliver a lecture and attend a benefit luncheon. University President Paul Armes presented the honorary degree at the conclusion of Bush's address.
