ON THE ROAD — Run, Boomer, run!

For four years, Boomer the dog was confined to running (more like spinning) in circles in his extremely small shelter kennel — until Jess saw a video of him and knew she had to help the energetic pup: "I was like, 'I'm just going to go get him and bring him back to California with me and then I'll figure it out.'"

It was clear Boomer needed an outlet for his energy and, luckily for him, Jess was the perfect owner to provide that outlet as an active person and avid runner.

"He was high energy and I'm high energy, too. So I knew that I would just incorporate him into my lifestyle. He just needed out. He just needed out of the shelter and then he was like a different dog," Jess said.

Boomer quickly joined Jess on her runs, working to the point where he could run farther and farther with her. He even joins her on skateboard and bike rides.

As a runner, Jess trains for half-marathons with the help and company of Boomer. He even joined her running the Los Angeles Half Marathon.

But Boomer did more for Jess than just provide a running buddy. He inspired her to launch an animal rescue organization in his name. Of course, all new animals are greeted to a warm welcome from the friendly pup.

"He was thrown into the mix with all my animals and did great. And so now, I think he kind of understands that other animals are coming in and, you know, gets why they're there," Jess said.

The video even shows Boomer sharing his crate with a chicken — quite the unlikely companion for a dog!

"Every year, we always celebrate Boomer's anniversary of the date that we rescued him," Jess said.
