INDIANAPOLIS — I was sitting on a friend's porch one autumn night when I was in college. There were a few of us there, chatting about our upcoming graduation and where we might be in five years.

Suddenly, a silver Mercedes came screaming down the road toward us. Seeing a car traveling 90 mph through a residential neighborhood is enough to get your attention, but we knew something the driver didn't: In the middle of the road in front of us was a massive speed bump.

We watched in horror as the car launched off the speed bump and went airborne. It sailed onto the sidewalk, slid across the neighbor's lawn, and slammed into the side of the house.

The driver sat there stunned, with an airbag in his face. We ran over to offer assistance, but before we could even say a word, he shifted into reverse and tried to flee the scene. That proved impossible because his car had sustained significant damage.

We later learned that the driver didn't own the car. He'd borrowed it from his older brother. Whoops.

While there's no video footage from that night, the following clip conjured up a bit of the chaos I beheld:

I realize that roundabouts are uncommon in some parts of the country, so drivers might get confused with how to navigate them. But a good rule of thumb is to follow the lane you're in, rather than speeding straight over obstacles with reckless abandon.
