Foley artists have to use a lot of physical energy and have perfect timing to recreate the sounds that can’t be captured while filming the actual movie. It’s a layer of movie making that creates a more realistic and immersive experience for the viewer that we don’t spend two seconds thinking about anytime we hit play. If the sound effects are poor or off, it ruins a movie experience. But when sound effects are off on purpose, you can create some comedy gold.
The internet does this most popularly by changing voices and dialogue. The YouTube channel Bad Lip Reading probably does this most famously, changing the dialogue of movie and TV clips for comedic effect.
And that’s what brings us to the video featured in this article.
Hip-hop star Cardi B is an unwitting foley artist. If you don't know her, all you need to know about her is that when she converses, she often makes nonword noises to convey her emotions or play up her persona.
In this video, YouTube user TheMexicoHouse takes actual clips from Cardi B and switches out some of the sound effects from several productions from the Star Wars franchise, and it’s hilarious.
Keep in mind that Cardi B did not make these sounds on purpose to try and match Star Wars sound effects; these noises just reflect her as a person. With that in mind, it’s hard not to watch and listen several times to take in the vocal gymnastics that are Cardi B.
