GRANTSVILLE — As the official start of pool season approaches, residents in Tooele County will soon, once again, get to enjoy a popular community attraction that has been closed for the last three summers.

The Energy Solutions Aquatic Center at The Peak Sports and Entertainment Complex — formerly the Deseret Peak Complex — will reopen to the public on June 1, after a multiyear reconstruction project.

The pool was in dire need of repairs as it had been sinking — an ongoing issue since it was built more than two decades ago, according to assistant county manager Brittany Lopez.

"It was causing a bigger headache than we could just Band-Aid," she said.

County leaders in 2022 took a deeper look at the problem to explore if a temporary or more permanent solution was needed.

As crews began assessing repairs, Lopez said it became evident that the damage was more extensive than anticipated and required reconstruction.

"We got to the point where our council approved the demolition and then (rebuilding) of the new pool," she told KSL.

Consultants who examined the original pool discovered that it was sinking because it was built on unstable native soil, according to Lopez. To prevent a similar occurrence in the future, crews excavated the site more than 25 feet deep until solid ground was reached and confirmed through soil testing.

"Then after the pool was built, we filled it for a 30-day test period to be sure there was no shifting or sinking — this was a success," she said.

The project meant a closure of the aquatic center during the 2023-2025 seasons, but the pool is now ready for the summer of 2026.

"So what we have is actually a completely different pool and more amenities with our new pool," Lopez said.

The new aquatic center includes two pools, instead of one, with both a lap pool and a leisure pool, with a lazy river. Additional features include "state-of-the-art" pool toys and two new slides, among other amenities.

It's expected to be one of the largest outdoor aquatic facilities in the state, according to a Tooele County Parks and Recreation press release.

Lopez believes it's one of the most important projects the county has done in the past few years.

"We find value in the pool — we think it's a big asset to the community," she said. "It's not a moneymaker, but it's a place where the community can gather, and that's important to us."

Lopez said that because the County Council believes the pool is such a gem to the community and appreciates everyone's patience during the rebuild, a one-day family pass is being offered to each household in Tooele County. The complimentary pass can be picked up at the county's parks and recreation building, she said.

A "soft-opening" for the new aquatic facility was held last weekend; the center will officially open for the season with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, June 1, at noon.
