CEDAR CITY — Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested in Iron County after law enforcement officers reportedly found 15 pounds of methamphetamine inside their vehicle during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
Oscar Soto Covarrubias, 73, and Oscar Soto, who turned 26 on Monday, were both booked into Iron County Jail on suspicion of one count each of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Soto's charging documents list the primary count as a second-degree felony. However, for Covarrubias, the charge has been enhanced to a first-degree felony, due to a prior conviction on a similar offense.
Both men are also facing misdemeanor drug possession charges, as troopers also reportedly found marijuana in a dispensary bag, although neither man had a medical marijuana card.
According to the probable cause statements filed in support of their arrests, shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, a Utah Highway Patrol trooper ran a records check on the California license plate of a white Lexus that was on northbound Interstate 15 just north of Cedar City.
