THE STAGE — I was a member of a really terrible band in college. The only thing we were good at was band names.
We played one show as Residents Against Graffiti. It's a name we got because one band member worked for the county cleaning up graffiti and had a couple of sweatshirts promoting a program called Residents Against Graffiti. That meant we had swag to throw out at the show.
We played one show as 4 Guys, a Bear and Meg. That's because we had four guys and one girl named Meg in the band. We also wanted to get a giant stuffed bear to sit in front of a drum set, which we thought would take the attention away from our lack of talent. We were poor college students, however, and that bear was expensive.
My personal favorite name was lifted from our favorite TV show at the time: "The Office." So, we played a couple of shows as the band Threat Level Midnight.
As I said, we were pretty terrible, but we had a good time. The two guys in this video are better musicians and all they have are skateboards and barcodes.
This video is a song constructed from noises and sounds created using barcodes and scanners. It's weird and wonderful, and probably going to be the strangest one minute and 15 seconds of your day. But it's worth it.
These guys already have a song better than any my band ever played, and they don't even have instruments. Still, nobody has a band name as cool as 4 Guys, a Bear and Meg.
