THE DEEP BLUE — My friend and fellow KSL contributor Grant Olsen just gave you all a terrifying Have You Seen This? of a close encounter with a great white shark.
The video is amazing and scares me to death every time I watch it. In an effort to keep on with a theme, I have this video for you today.
Some divers were enjoying some whale watching in Tonga. At one point, the whale gets its tail out of the water and slaps the surface like we've seen many times before. But what's different is this diver had his camera on and was almost pummeled by the massive mammal's tail.
This is what the diver said in the YouTube description:
"While swimming in Tonga, my fiancé and I met an uncommonly large humpback whale calf. It picked me out of our group and then placed itself beneath me while vocalizing and blowing bubbles. ... It then proceeded to try to take my head off! By dodging and moving my GoPro behind my head I was able to avoid its tail slap by less than an inch!"
Here's a lesson: Don't mess with the territory of a whale ... or a shark ... or, maybe just stay out of the water.
Maybe I'm saying that based on my own thalassophobia, or fear of large bodies of water. Either way, the ocean is beautiful, these animals are magnificent, but they can be terrifying.
