THE TUBE — British comedian Kevin Freshwater has a bit he likes to perform on the streets.
He runs up to random people, shouts "Finish the lyrics!" and shoves a microphone in the stranger’s face. With a bit like this, you’re mostly going to expect angry reactions, shy performances, and even threats of a punch to the face.
But when Freshwater ran up to Charlotte Awbery and asked her to finish the lyrics to "Shallow" — the Oscar-nominated song sung by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in the recent remake of "A Star Is Born" — he has no idea what would come out of her mouth.
First Awberry finishes the lyric in a low register, and Freshwater is impressed, he asks her to continue. She then belts out the chills-inducing chorus, and Freshwater can’t believe what he’s hearing.
And people, it is a great performance.
Once he posted the video on Twitter, people all over the world stood up and paid attention, quickly making the clip go viral.
Buzzfeed reported that Awberry’s Instagram following quickly shot up to 100,000 followers. And according to oprahmag.com, the performance wasn’t only good for Awberry, but "Shallow" rose into the Top 40 of the iTunes charts since her video went viral.
Of course, some say the video is staged, because it turns out Awberry is a professional singer who has been in the business for 10 years. But if she needed to set something up to get a big break, more power to her.
Whatever the case may be, she’s got the impressive pipes to back it up.
