LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) — Department of Agriculture is conducting further testing to rule out avian flu in the deaths of more than 10 chickens last week in front of the Historic County Building in Kauai.
The Garden Island reports (http://bit.ly/1OgQwLv ) three of the birds have tested negative for the virus. Veterinary medical officer at the USDA Animal Disease Control Branch Travis Heskett says further testing is being conducted to determine how they died.
Botulism, a type of food poisoning, was also investigated as a possible cause of death.
More than a week ago, a Lihue resident noticed chickens dying around the Historic County Building. He called various agencies until the Division of Forestry and Wildlife collected the dead birds and shipped them to the USDA office on Oahu.
