SALT LAKE CITY — As smoke billows across state, some Utahns are questioning whether Wednesday's Independence Day celebrations should include fireworks at all.

Tom Mills delivered a petition to the State Capitol Building Tuesday calling for a ban of fireworks to the capital. It bore the names of 5,000 people who support the idea.
Utahn Greogry Christensen's signature is not among those on Mills' petition, but he understands why some of his fellow Utahns are resorting to such measures.
"I guess I'm frustrated and concerned over our current fire conditions," Christensen said. "The precautions that we (are) taking to prevent fires just doesn't seem to be working."
Some cities and towns have even cancelled their fireworks displays: Park City, Henefer, Coalville, Nephi, Marysvale and Hurricane. There are also many fireworks restrictions in place across the state.
But there are still ways you can "ooh" and "awe" Wednesday night. The fireworks show at Sugarhouse Park, for example, is still on schedule to blast off at 10 p.m.
"We work very close with the Salt Lake City Fire Department and the (state) fire marshal, and he will be on site actually at the show when we set off the fireworks," organizer Scott Workmand said Tuesday.
