MILAN (AP) — The general director of La Scala says he doesn't anticipate labor issues will interfere with the May 1 concert to mark the inauguration of the Expo 2015 world's fair.
Some unions had announced they would recommend their workers skip the premiere of Puccini's "Turandot," conducted by Riccardo Chailly, because it coincides with the traditional workers' holiday.
But Alexander Pereira said Thursday that "we have a vast majority of our collaborators who say they will come."
The premiere will mark Chailly's operatic debut as principal conductor, replacing Daniel Barenboim. Chailly, a Milan native, is expected to take on full responsibilities as musical director in two years.
Chailly said he was honored to conduct "Turandot" for the Expo opening, saying the world's fair "should be a starting point looking forward" for Milan.
