SYRACUSE -- Syracuse police are conceding a goof after an officer bought donated items from the department and tried to sell them in his second-hand store.
Chief Brian Wallace tells KSL Newsradio they were Halloween masks and other things that Walmart donated in 2007. Wallace says the items bought by a sergeant were deemed by Syracuse Parks and Recreation to be "too scary" for the annual pumpkin walk.
"If we had just thrown it in the Dumpster, we would have been done with it and wouldn't have worried about it," Wallace said Monday. "If somebody came by and pulled it out of the Dumpster, I guess they could do what they want with it."
Instead, Syracuse City is reviewing what turned out to be a no-no. City leaders are trying to determine this week if personnel policies were violated.
"We, in retrospect, should have probably have just thrown it in the Dumpster and gotten rid of it," Wallace said. "It was not a large amount of product. The retail value was probably only $40 or $50."
City officials have not disciplined the sergeant. He has removed the remaining items from his store in Clearfield.
