SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Military surplus is helping Utah's police departments.
A Department of Defense program that began in 1999 gives millions of dollars in equipment -- ranging from night vision goggles to helicopters to needy law enforcement agencies.
Utah police departments pay extremely low prices, and in some cases pay just the cost of shipping.
In 2005, Utah received nearly 140 items valued at more than $35,000. That's according to an analysis by The Associated Press of the program's numbers.
Over the past several years Summit County received around 30 M14 rifles, valued at several thousand dollars each.
