SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Court employees will no longer have to take a furlough and a freeze on hiring for judicial vacancies is being lifted.

State Court Administrator Daniel Becker told the Utah Judicial Council on Monday that the Legislature treated the court system well.

Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Christine Durham told lawmakers at the beginning of the legislative session that proposed budget cuts would necessitate furloughs of all court employees for five workweeks. The move would have meant courthouses would close one day a week.

But legislation passed during the session is expected to generate income by raising court filing fees.

Still, the courts plan to cut 52 staff positions and lay off 18 state-employed court reporters by the end of June.
