SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Utah Senate has passed a resolution aimed at helping local governments pave the way for the development of renewable energy resources.
Senate Joint Resolution 1 calls on the State Energy Program to research the need for model solar and geothermal ordinances at the local government level. It also encourages local governments to adopt a model ordinance for wind energy projects.
Sponsored by Sen. Pat Jones, D-Holladay, the resolution cleared the Senate Tuesday, 27-1.
Senators shut down an attempt by Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, to add nuclear energy to the mix of energy technologies. The resolution now goes to the House.
Gov. Jon Huntsman's energy policy calls for 20 percent of Utah's energy to come from renewable sources by 2025.
