SALT LAKE CITY — A 59-year-old man has died after he was hit by a car while cycling in downtown Salt Lake City Monday evening, police said.

Salt Lake City Police Sgt. Miles Southworth said the crash happened about 7:29 p.m. near 500 S. 300 West. First responders arrived at the scene and treated Scott Hunt, who suffered "critical life-threatening injuries," Salt Lake police said in a news release Tuesday.

Hunt was taken to the hospital and died several hours later, according to police.

Officials believe a car was traveling west on 500 South and struck Hunt, who was crossing the road on a bicycle near 300 West. Police are still investigating the cause and other circumstances surrounding the crash.

The driver is said to be cooperating, and police do not suspect the driver was impaired.
