AMERICAN FORK — A 20-year-old man died after the car he was driving crashed near Timpanogos Cave National Monument early Monday.

About 2:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in American Fork Canyon, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Alexander. He said a passenger vehicle was traveling west on state Route 92 when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with the mountainside.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.

It's unclear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation. Troopers said they suspect drowsiness was a contributing factor.

Traffic into the canyon closed at the mouth of the canyon for hours, but it had reopened by 6:30 a.m.
