WEST JORDAN — Two men were arrested this weekend after allegedly luring a group to a business parking lot to fight and shooting at them and injuring one person.
Ricardo Reyes Hidalgo, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of using a concealed firearm to commit a violent crime, aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, shooting a gun and causing injury, and seven counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.
Hector Ruiz Villanueva, 21 — who allegedly handed the gun to Hidalgo — was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious injury.
On Saturday, a group told police that they had been "involved in an online and phone argument" with a man, according to a police booking affidavit. Following the argument, one of the victims received a text message with a map and a pinned location near 5600 West and 9200 South.
After he was arrested on Sunday, Hidalgo allegedly admitted to sending the pin and then driving with Villanueva to the location "with the intent to fight," the affidavit states. When the victims arrived, Hidalgo claimed they were armed with knives, so "he stepped back, turned and retrieved a loaded firearm from Hector, then advanced back toward the victims, and fired eight rounds with the intent to frighten the victims. Ricardo admitted to intentionally shooting one victim in the abdomen, which resulted in serious bodily injury," according to the affidavit.
Additional information about the person shot was not immediately available.
The police affidavits do not say how many people were allegedly shot at. The victims, however, were able to help police identify Hidalgo and Villanueva as their alleged attackers. Police served search warrants on their residences on Sunday and arrested the men.
