WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman was killed and a man seriously burned following a wild and tragic series of events early Tuesday.
Just before 2 a.m., a 46-year-old woman was having mechanical issues with her 1984 RV and her friend, a 59-year-old man, arrived on scene and was able to get it running again, according to West Valley police.
The man then drove the RV on 5600 West, but the engine caught fire near 3800 South. The fire spread and the man soon found himself on fire too, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
The man, for an unknown reason, then jumped from the moving RV. How fast the vehicle was going when he jumped remained under investigation Tuesday.
After jumping from the RV and leaving it with no driver, the vehicle began to roll backward down a hill on 5600 West, Vainuku said. As the vehicle began to fishtail, the woman tried to get out through the passenger door, but the RV tipped over just as she was exiting and fell on top of her, police said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man taken to University of Utah Hospital in serious condition to be treated for burns. The victims' names have not yet been released.
Police also noted that after family members of the woman started arriving at the crash scene, they started fighting with each other and an officer had to pin a man against a vehicle to stop the fighting. No one was arrested from the incident.
