SOUTH JORDAN — Criminal charges were filed Tuesday against a fifth man tied to the kidnapping, killing and burning of a man in South Jordan nearly 11 months ago.

Cavell Eddie Tupai, 30, of West Valley City, is charged in 3rd District Court with murder and aggrieved kidnapping, first-degree felonies, in the Nov. 24, 2022, death of Joseph Lee "Gino" Montoya, 50, whose body was found in the trunk of his burning Mercedes near 11700 S. Bingham Rim Road.

In March, Dillon Edward Noble, 30, was charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping, first-degree felonies. Last month, Caile Edward Noble, 65, Denis Madsen, 61, and John Ace Shield, 61, all of Taylorsville, were each charged with murder, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated arson, first-degree felonies.

Police determined there were several crime scenes associated with the investigation, including one at 6513 S. Redwood Road, where detectives believe Montoya was beaten and put in the trunk of his own vehicle.

Tupai later admitted to being at the Redwood Road residence and witnessed Noble hit Montoya, charging documents state.

"Tupai said since he was Dillon's guest, he went to help load the body (into the trunk) out of respect,'" the charges state.

"Due to the careless acts of the defendant and others, the victim is now deceased. The defendant had no regard for the safety and welfare of the victim," prosecutors wrote in charging documents.
