ARKANSAS — When I was a Boy Scout we went for a week to a camp in central Utah. On the first day, the quartermaster handed us a small bag of food and explained that it was supposed to last us the entire week. I guess the point was to help us develop discipline.

"You won't be given anything else while you're here," he said. "Use it wisely."

The problem is that 13-year-olds aren't known for handling things "wisely," and they're notorious for their hunger. We plowed through the fruit, crackers, granola bars and canned chicken by the second day. So we basically were left with just raisins for the remainder of the week.

By night four, we were ravenous and feral. It was like the "Lord of the Flies." We were lying out under the stars and reminiscing about all our favorite meals from back home when suddenly a blindingly bright light rocketed across the sky above us. In my delirious state, I thought it was a flaming plane that was going to crash directly on top of us.

Turns out, we had witnessed an impressive meteor. It was the one good thing to come out of that experience. I was reminded of that manic moment when I saw this video:

The recent meteor spotted in the sky over central Arkansas was caught on our doorbell camera flying south of our home," the video caption states.

Wow. It definitely looks amazing to see that meteor light up the sky. And it's so much more enjoyable to behold it with a full stomach.
