RICHLAND, Washington — Most of us have encountered the phenomenon of leaving your garbage can on the street the night before pickup, then waking up to find your garbage scattered all over the yard. The prime suspect in these situations is usually a strong gust of wind. Or, perhaps, your garbage can fell victim to marauding raccoons.

But what if the very people who are paid to pick up your garbage were actually the ones who sent it flying onto your grass?

Now, I'm not faulting the driver of the truck. Icy roads are a menace to us all. But after the runaway truck demolishes not one, not two, but three garbage cans, it's amusing to see the worker hop out of the truck to calmly position a fourth can for pickup.

I wish I had been on the sidewalk that day to see this happen. I can only imagine that as the worker was repositioning the fourth garbage can, he was whistling nervously as his eyes darted back and forth to make sure nobody had just seen what happened.

You might have evaded the neighbors this time, my friend, but just remember that security cameras are everywhere.
