AMERICAN FORK — Police in northeast Utah County are warning residents — especially those with small children and pets — to take precautions after a dog was attacked by a mountain lion.

American Fork police were first alerted Tuesday evening to a report of a dog that was attacked in the Cedar Hills foothills area near the border of Pleasant Grove. The dog's condition was not immediately available on Wednesday.

Suspecting the dog may have been attacked by a mountain lion, American Fork and Pleasant Grove police searched the area and contacted the Division of Wildlife Resources.

"The attack was not witnessed and we have not had a confirmed sighting of a mountain lion. However, due to the fact that the incident occurred near our city limits and near the Murdock Canal Trail, we felt it best to make the public aware of the concern," Pleasant Grove police posted on their Facebook page Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, DWR officials confirmed the dog was injured by a mountain lion.

"The dog is believed to have been attacked in the yard and not in the foothills. Please be cautious while using the Murdock Canal. If you live in the northern end of Pleasant Grove, please be aware of your surroundings and know where small children are at all times. Please consider bringing pets indoors," the police department stated.
