SALT LAKE CITY — A second man has been arrested in connection with the shootings of three people outside a club in downtown Salt Lake City.

Rene Mendoza was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Friday for investigation of three counts of aggravated assault.

Just after 2 a.m. on Aug. 27, as all the bars in the area of Exchange Place, near 300 S. Main, were closing, police say Mendoza and Justin Travis Singer, 32, were arguing with another group. Singer "caused a fight by punching (a) victim in the face, which created a larger fight," according to a police booking affidavit.

Mendoza then fired several rounds at the group, striking two customers and an employee of the bar, according to police. All three men, ages 22, 25 and 31, were hit in the legs or arms.

"Officers immediately provided first aid and applied tourniquets to two of the victims. Paramedics transported all three men to the hospital," according to a statement from police.

Singer was located and arrested quickly. Salt Lake gang detectives said they used surveillance video from businesses to identify Mendoza and located him on Friday.
