Lagoon to require face masks in line queues starting June 15

In addition to social distancing guidelines, all Lagoon guests will be required to wear face masks while waiting in line for rides starting Monday, June 15. Very young children and toddlers are exempted from this policy. Guests are already required to wear a face mask to enter the park. COVID-19 changing the conversation about reusable bags

Plastic bags have become the target of environmental activists in recent years in an effort to combat pollution and climate change. Grocery stores then started offering reusable bags as an alternative to single-use plastic bags, as well as expanding paper bag options and charging for disposable bags. But the outbreak of COVID-19 is changing the conversation on reusable bags as grocery stores have temporarily suspended the use of reusables because the virus has been reported to live on surfaces for several hours to several days. Now cities that have banned plastic bags are grappling with what this means for the movement moving forward. Logan Councilman Herm Olsen, a practicing attorney, sponsored the bill in Logan to ban the use of plastic bags, which was ultimately passed in December. “Cache County and Logan City kind of slowed this plastic bag ban because they don’t want to add to the burden on merchants during COVID-19,” Olsen said. “I want to be sympathetic to their plight, but I think banning the bags will actually help businesses during this time.” Read the full story here. —Mack Jones, KSL

Best way to reduce coronavirus transmission is by wearing a face mask, study finds

The new coronavirus spreads mainly via airborne transmission and wearing a mask is the most effective way to stop person-to person spread, according to a new study. The researchers calculated that wearing face masks prevented more than 78,000 infections in Italy between April 6 and May 9, and more than 66,000 infections in New York City between April 17 and May 9. 404 cases, no deaths Saturday in Utah

The Utah Department of Health is reporting 404 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Saturday. The report continues a string of high case counts that have marked a recent rise in coronavirus cases in Utah. The state has not seen fewer than 200 cases in one day since May 28. No new deaths were reported Saturday, keeping the state's total at 139. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Coronavirus claims UVU student

A Utah Valley University student has died from the novel coronavirus, the university announced this week. Trevor Syphus Lee, 27, was a senior and scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2021. Lee was taking the summer off and not enrolled in any classes when he died on June 9. "According to the state health department, Trevor had underlying medical conditions," UVU President Astrid Tuminez wrote in an email to the university community. "As fellow Wolverines, we grieve his loss." — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Navajo Nation reports 92 new cases and 5 deaths Friday

The Navajo Department of Health reported 92 new cases of COVID-19 and five new deaths from the disease Friday, with an estimated 3,094 individuals having recovered from the disease. The total number of positive COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation has reached 6,470, with 303 deaths; the nation, partially located in Utah, has been a hot spot for novel coronavirus infections on a per-capita basis. "Please do not let your guard down against the coronavirus," urged Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez in a news release. "We cannot go back to the way things were before the virus until the daily numbers decrease consistently and we have a vaccine. We must accept all of the preventative measures to keep our families and communities safe. It may be hard to accept the changes, but we have to create a new normal. ICYMI: Catch up on coronavirus developments from yesterday

The Utah Department of Health reported 325 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with eight new reported deaths.

It's official: Kane County is the first to move to green, or "new normal," on the state's color-coded COVID-19 risk dial.

A medicine that may treat and prevent COVID-19 is now being tested in patients in multiple sites around the United States, according to an announcement Thursday from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert called on Utahns Friday to “do better” about wearing face masks in public. While wearing a face covering in public isn’t mandatory in the state, officials have continually asked the public to wear one in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.
