SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported 325 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with eight new reported deaths. The number of new deaths reported matches May 19 as the most in one day.
Six of the new COVID-19 deaths were in Salt Lake County, including four men over the age of 85 who were living in long-term care facilities. A state health official told KSL they didn't know if all were residents of the same facility.
A woman older than 85 also living in a long-term care facility and a Salt Lake County man aged 18-60 who was hospitalized also died. The state health department said the other two were a Weber County woman aged 60-85 living in a long-term care facility and a Washington County woman aged 18-60 who was hospitalized at the time of her death.
Friday's totals give Utah 13,577 total confirmed cases since the outbreak began in March, with 988 total hospitalizations and 139 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 13,252 cases in the state.
It's the third consecutive day that the state reported at least 300 new cases; Utah has also reported at least 200 new cases every day since May 28. The state has experienced a 56% increase between May 28 and Friday. More than one-third of its total cases have been recorded during that time.
The new numbers indicate a 2.5% increase in total positive cases since Thursday. Of the 258,786 tests conducted in Utah so far, 5.2% were positive for COVID-19. An estimated 7,935 Utahns have recovered.
Twenty new hospitalizations were reported Friday, as well. In all, 130 Utahns were currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 of the 988 Utahns who have been hospitalized since March.
The state health department's new total came hours after Kane County became the first area in Utah to reach green on the state's COVID-19 restrictions risk dial. Salt Lake City is the only remaining location in the state that's under orange status while the rest of the state is yellow.
