Trump tours, touts mask factory — but no mask for him

Making himself Exhibit A for reopening the country, President Donald Trump visited an Arizona face mask factory Tuesday, using the trip to demonstrate his determination to see an easing of stay-at-home orders even as the coronavirus remains a dire threat. Trump did not wear a mask despite guidelines saying they should be worn inside the factory at all times. “The people of our country should think of themselves as warriors. We have to open,” Trump declared as he left Washington on a trip that was more about the journey than the destination. In Arizona, Trump acknowledged the human cost of returning to normalcy. — Associated Press

Visit Salt Lake launching effort to help local businesses survive during COVID crisis

As Salt Lake-area businesses struggle to survive during the economic turmoil caused by the coronavirus, a local nonprofit organization is introducing a new way for patrons to lend their financial support. Visit Salt Lake Tuesday announced the creation of the Gift Card Marketplace, an online outlet that sells electronic gift certificates to participating Salt Lake County businesses. The portal was developed as a way to generate much-needed revenue for small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, explained Visit Salt Lake communications director Shawn Stinson. — Jasen Lee, KSL

Stadium of Fire 2020 concert canceled due to coronavirus concerns; fireworks still on

The Stadium of Fire 2020 concert has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, organizers announced Tuesday. The event held at LaVell Edwards Stadium on the Brigham Young University campus was originally scheduled for July 4 as part of America’s Freedom Festival, an annual patriotic event in Provo. The lineup of performers for the concert had not been announced. The fireworks show planned for July 4 is still on and free to the public. Social distancing guidelines will be implemented for those wanting to view the show, officials said. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Intermountain Healthcare, U of U Health now offering antibody testing to understand COVID-19 spread in Utah

Intermountain Healthcare is now offering antibody testing in its facilities across the state to try and understand the novel coronavirus’ spread in Utah. Tests are limited now but availability may increase in the coming weeks, doctors said on Tuesday. Patients getting tested will have their blood drawn and sent to ARUP Laboratories for testing. A referral from a doctor is required. Also on Tuesday, ARUP Labs announced it had partnered with University of Utah Health to provide antibody testing as well. The testing will help inform doctors about the virus and learn more about the antibody response to the infection. The tests should be given to those who meet specific parameters — if an individual had COVID-19 symptoms in January, February or March and did not get a COVID-19 test; if someone was put at high risk, i.e. a person they lived with tested positive; those who have had COVID-19 symptoms and a nasal swab tested negative. If the antibody test is positive, it means the patient very likely had COVID-19. However, doctors cannot say for sure if the prior infection means the patient is immune to the disease and protected from future infection. “This is not a ticket to go out and interact with the community at will,” Dr. Eddie Stenehjem, infectious diseases physician, said at a Tuesday news conference. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Utah lawmaker says government overreacted to COVID-19 pandemic, 'can’t save everybody'

A Utah lawmaker says government needs to admit it overreacted to the coronavirus pandemic and “completely” reopen the state. Rep. Paul Ray, R-Clearfield, also said he’s drafting legislation to prohibit local health departments from “unilaterally” quarantining healthy people and closing down the economy. He said it’s time to stop closing businesses and putting undue regulations and restrictions on residents. “It’s time to stop letting panic and fear drive our policy. We need to open Utah and allow people to make their own decisions. Encourage compromised individuals to isolate, but don’t bankrupt everyone else,” he wrote in a lengthy Facebook post. — Dennis Romboy, KSL

Lehi gym makes comeback with help from members, PPP loan

More than five weeks after shutting down its operations and laying off nearly all employees, Legends Boxing in Lehi is making a comeback, thanks to loyal members and the Paycheck Protection Program. “I mean, we lost a substantial amount of revenue in April,” said Rob Scott, owner of Legends Boxing. “It was significant from what we’re used to bringing in.” — Matt Rascon, KSL TV

Utah sees 132 new cases of COVID-19, 6 new deaths

Utah’s total number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 132 from Monday, with six new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Tuesday's totals give Utah 5,449 confirmed cases, with 456 total hospitalizations and 56 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 5,317 cases in the state. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Stocks rally from Hong Kong to Wall Street on reopening hope

Stocks rallied worldwide on Tuesday as more countries relaxed restrictions on businesses, raising hopes for a recovery from the historic plunge that is sweeping the global economy. The S&P 500 rose 1.8% in early afternoon trading following similar gains in Paris, London and Hong Kong. Crude oil also continued its mini-rally after falling to record lows last month. — Associated Press

Utah’s oil industry crumbling under coronavirus pressure

A new report looking at the state of energy in Utah details a grim picture for the oil industry, with the price per barrel for Uinta Basin waxy crude dropping by 90% since January. As of May 1, all drilling rigs had left Utah and many current wells are being shut in, according to the Utah Geological Survey. Utah’s Energy Landscape, released Monday, describes the significant changes to the oil industry, with predictions of declining production by as much as 6 million barrels per day due to lack of demand in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. — Amy Joi O'Donoghue, KSL

Utah woman shares experience of COVID-19 diagnosis while pregnant

When Melissa Brewer decided to do a precautionary test for COVID-19, she was almost certain her results would come back negative. “In my mind I was 99.9% sure we were going to be negative because we had no crazy symptoms,” she said. “We were feeling great. I had the sniffles a little bit.” A few days prior to getting swabbed, her husband lost his sense of smell and taste. Some in southwest Utah want to loosen COVID-19 restrictions

Southwest Utah has seen very few cases of COVID-19. That’s one reason cities, counties, and the Southwest Utah Public Health Department support loosening some of the coronavirus restrictions on people and businesses there. They are asking Gov. Gary Herbert to let the area go from an “orange,” or moderate-risk, to “yellow,” or low-risk, designation. That would mean people could be in groups of 50. Gymnastics gym owners frustrated after being told they can’t open

Frustrations are building among gymnastics gyms that thought they got the green light to open, but have been told to shut down by the Salt Lake County Health Department. “We had been told by the (Salt Lake County) mayor's office that we had been categorized as a gym and would then be allowed to be opening,” said Heather Fullmer, the owner of Gymnastics Training Center in Salt Lake. Fullmer said they practically worked around the clock to get their gym ready with all the strict guidelines so they could open their doors on Monday. Then they got a call from the health department saying they were classified as a team sport or team facility, and therefore could not open up. — Dan Rascon, KSL TV

Utah shopping malls reopen after COVID-19 restrictions lightened

Several major shopping malls in Utah are reopening after state leaders moved Utah’s COVID-19 level from high to moderate, and into the stabilization phase. Fashion Place Mall in Murray opens on Tuesday, and City Creek Center in downtown Salt Lake opens on Wednesday. As for Station Park in Farmington, people may not have realized it, but it never closed. Most of the individual stores are still dark, but at least two shops have been open the whole time. — Tania Dean, KSL TV

UK becomes virus epicenter of Europe; S Korea plays baseball

Britain on Tuesday became the first country in Europe to confirm more than 30,000 coronavirus deaths, and infections rose sharply again in Russia, even as other nations made great strides in taming the virus. China marked its third week with no new virus deaths and South Korea restarted its professional baseball season. In the U.S., some states began halting steps to lift the lockdown restrictions being blamed for throwing millions out of work and upending the global economy even as thousands of new U.S. infections and deaths were being reported daily. — Associated Press

Utah’s total number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 142 on Monday, with no new reported deaths.

Hundreds of people are rolling up their sleeves in countries across the world to be injected with experimental vaccines that might stop COVID-19, spurring hope — maybe unrealistic — that an end to the pandemic may arrive sooner than anticipated.

An influential coronavirus model often cited by the White House is now forecasting that 134,000 people will die of COVID-19 in the United States, nearly double its previous prediction.

Stock indexes are down slightly in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday, as the market takes a pause following its best month in decades.
