PROVO — The Stadium of Fire 2020 concert has been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, organizers announced Tuesday.

The event held at LaVell Edwards Stadium on the Brigham Young University campus was originally scheduled for July 4 as part of America’s Freedom Festival, an annual patriotic event in Provo.

The lineup of performers for the concert had not been announced.

The fireworks show planned for July 4 is still on and free to the public. Social distancing guidelines will be implemented for those wanting to view the show, officials said.

“The safety and health of our guests is always the first priority at any Freedom Festival event, period,” Jim Evans, executive director of America’s Freedom Festival, said in a statement. “Even in a typical year that’s the prevailing theme. But with so many of our loved ones at risk from this illness, including so many wonderful military veterans, we have to be especially careful this year."

Other canceled events included the Grand Parade, the Balloon Fest and Freedom Days.

All other Freedom Festival summer events were canceled as well.

However, regularly scheduled spring contests are still ongoing but being held virtually now. The submission deadline for the student art, essay, speech and teacher contests was extended to May 18.

Organizers said they still plan on holding all events as scheduled in 2021.

“Our fireworks show this year will be a magnificent tribute to the compassion and resiliency of America,” said Steve Shallenberger, chair of the Freedom Festival Board of Trustees, in a statement.
