A week before he faces the voters, Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon proposes a budget with less fat and a smaller payroll.

With revenues sinking by $10 million, due to less sales tax, Corroon proposes to put the county on a diet. He pledges to reduce the number of county employees by 5 percent.

"We'll propose rolling back the number of employees to levels that we haven't seen in about 10 years in Salt Lake County," Corroon said.

He also promises no property tax hikes.

Corroon's budget calls for spending $201 million next year. That's $12 million less than this year.
