PROVO — Finding a penny on the ground usually means a day of good luck, but what about finding $10,000?

If you’ve found $10,000 on the ground, you’re either incredibly lucky or you’re a part of what Vivint, a smart-home services provider based in Provo, has deemed “the greatest treasure hunt you will ever be a part of."

Vivint has hidden a “truckload” of orange balls —1,000 in total— throughout Utah, each equipped with a QR and unique alphanumeric code that coincides with a specific prize. The prizes total $100,000 in all, while the most expensive prize is $10,000 in cash.

The Hunt for 100K is a campaign to promote Vivint Smart Home’s annual company meeting, Vivint Con,” Vivint Vice President of Sales Operations David Jones said. “We also use it as part of our recruiting efforts at local universities.”

The scavenger hunt began Sept. 26 and runs until Oct. 14 or until all the balls are found. So far, half of the balls have already been found, while some of the bigger prizes still remain hidden.

Prizes include cash amounts ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, as well as a $600 gift card to Apple, $400 to Carnival Cruises, a wakeboard, longboard, Apple TV, Go Pro and more.

The balls were hidden individually across the Wasatch Front (not dropped out of a helicopter as the promo video suggests) and hopeful winners can follow the VivintCon Instagram account and VivintCon Snapchat for clues as to where the balls are located.

“We’re giving out clues periodically, averaging about two per day,” Jones said. “(And) the balls are hidden on or near college campuses and within the Provo, Orem, Salt Lake, Weber, and Ogden city centers.”

Anyone who follows the clues and finds a ball can scan the QR and enter the attached code into the box on the Hunt for 100K website to find out what prize they’ve won. However, each “player” can only redeem one prize. To redeem the prize, finders must register for VivintCon and attend the event on Oct. 14.
