BOX ELDER COUNTY — A Washington state boy died and another boy was seriously injured after a rollover accident on I-84 Saturday night, police said.
Police said a 10-year-old boy was ejected and a 9-year-old boy was partially ejected from a van in a one-vehicle rollover accident. Both were not wearing seat belts, officials said.
The 10-year-old, who UHP identified as Tony N. Orlov of Lake Stevens, Washington, died at the scene, according to police. UHP added the 9-year-old was taken by a medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in serious condition, but was stabilized.
Utah Highway Patrol officials said it received a call of the accident just before 9:25 p.m..
Police said that a Toyota Sienna was traveling east on the highway about eight miles east of Snowville, which is just south of the Utah-Idaho border. As the vehicle was traveling in the inside lane, the driver became “temporarily distracted” and drifted left into the median and then over-corrected back to the right, investigators said.
The van then went across both lanes and then off the roadway before rolling one and a half times, coming to a rest upside down.
The boy's father, mother, three sisters — ages 7, 12, 14 — and oldest brother, 13, were all wearing seat belts and suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Bear River Valley Hospital and later released.
