FAIRVIEW — A man died Saturday when the semitruck he was driving rolled off of state Route 31 near Fairview, a Utah Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The truck, which was hauling a backhoe on its trailer, was headed west on S.R. 31 about 2 miles east of Fairview when its brakes began to overheat, according to Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Evan Kirby. Witnesses reported the vehicle had been traveling too fast down the canyon, Kirby said.
As the truck came around a right hand bend, it veered off into the eastbound lane. The driver, Troy Young, 48, of Price, attempted to bring it back into the correct lane but overshot and drove the vehicle off the right side of the road, Kirby said.
The truck went up a hillside and rolled, detaching the backhoe from the trailer. Young, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the cab and killed, Kirby said.
The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating whether drugs may have contributed to the accident, Kirby said.
S.R. 31 closed in both directions as a result of the accident, but was expected to reopen at roughly 3 p.m. local time.
