MURRAY — The Humane Society of Utah placed a record number of animals in homes during 2014, maintaining some of the highest adoption rates in the U.S.

The Human Society of Utah placed 9,910 dogs and cats, a total of 88.4 percent of their animals, according to a news release. The numbers of dogs placed in homes increased more than 50 percent from 2013 and the Humane Society credits it to opening their new canine area.

“We’re elated that we were able to place almost 10,000 dogs and cats last year,” Humane Society of Utah executive director Gene Baierschmidt said in a news release. “It truly was a watershed year for us. Everything just seemed to come together in 2014 allowing us to have a record year for placements.”

With the building expansion during the past several years, the organization also opened a new state-of-the-art cat area, which increased cat placements by 25 percent, the news release said. The growth and expansion allowed the Humane Society of Utah to rescue more animals and it transferred around 3,000 dogs and cats from other shelters.

The shelter also spayed and neutered 10,436 animals in 2014.

“In 2015, we plan on continuing to enhance and refine our multi-pronged adoption programs to allow us to place even more animals in good homes,” Baierschmidt said.
