SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A police chief who also is a Utah state senator helped kill a bill that would have made ticket quotas illegal.
The Senate Judiciary Committee defeated the bill Thursday, 3-2, nearly three weeks after it was approved in the House. The committee's vote means the bill is dead for now.
Ogden Police Chief Jon Greiner says it's not up to lawmakers to tell police departments how to manage their officers. Greiner is a state senator.
The bill is sponsored by Rep. Neil Hansen, a Democrat from Ogden. He says Ogden police look at the number of tickets when evaluating the performance of officers.
Greiner insists officers are not required to write a certain number of tickets.
