DENVER — In 10 months, a woman named for the world-famous female pilot will complete the journey across the world Amelia Earhart was unable to.

Next June, Amelia Rose Earhart, 30, will fly approximately 100 hours — 28,000 miles broken up over 14 stops, retracing the final flight plan of her namesake, who never completed the 1937 flight.

Amelia Rose, a weather and traffic co-anchor in Denver and certified pilot, shares a “common ancestry” with the well-known Earhart, and was named for the woman who believed in women’s abilities and in adventure for the sake of adventure.

The Denver woman said that because of her name, every day of her life has held some reminder of her. Once an adult, people would ask if she was a pilot, and eventually, she was able to answer yes.

In 2004, she began flight training and later became a certified pilot. Wanting to share her passion for flying and encourage girls’ interest in becoming pilots, she founded the Fly with Amelia Foundation. The non-profit provides flight scholarships to teen girls and young women, offers flight-based education curriculum, among other opportunities.

The flight across the world, she said, has been a desire of hers since she was 18 years old.

“My passion for flight and adventure has driven me to explore new experiences I never would have imagined possible as a child,” Amelia Rose wrote on the Fly with Amelia blog. “Hard work, persistence and great role models have enabled me to fly outside the lines and achieve my dreams. Aviation plays an integral role in my life and I hope to share some of that joy with others through this adventure.”
