BOUNTIFUL -- Early Sunday morning, the entire city of Bountiful went dark as officials worked to update an electrical system.

Crews shut down power to the city at 1 a.m. Sunday to complete a two-year upgrade to the city's 43-year-old electrical system.

Some areas, like the Bountiful Temple, were illuminated by backup power. But everything else, including street lights, TV's and clocks, were out until 4 a.m. Many residents drove around the city and mountains to take in the view of the darkened city and the stars overhead.

The city invested $3 million to upgrade its Parrish Substation in Centerville, where power is delivered into Bountiful through Rocky Mountain Power's 138,000-volt power lines and converted into 46,000 volts.

Crews from Bountiful Power, Rocky Mountain Power and a joint contractor Cache Valley Electric reconnected transmission lines to three new circuit breakers and replaced an old circuit breaker.
