CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) -- Construction of a $3 billion gas pipeline from Wyoming to Oregon is expected to begin soon now that the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has approved the project.
The 42-inch pipeline will begin at Opal in western Wyoming and cross northern Utah and Nevada before ending at Malin, Ore.
The BLM approved the project Monday. Meanwhile, El Paso Corp. has been staging equipment and pipe sections close to the 675-mile route.
El Paso spokesman Richard Wheatley says the company expects final Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approval within days. Construction would begin soon after.
Up to 5,000 workers will work on the project, which will begin in seven locations along the pipeline route. El Paso expects the pipeline to become operational in March.
