THE WORLD OF WALDO — Growing up I owned multiple "Where's Waldo?" books and I loved them.
I remember when I first got them how frustrated I would get because I couldn't find that goofy tourist in that awful sweater. I distinctly remember the beach scene causing me some pretty serious childhood anxiety.
Eventually, I memorized where Waldo was and could pick him out pretty easily. Then I started noticing other people and situations on the pages and I started thinking things like, "Why is Waldo wearing a sweater and a beanie? He's on the beach." It didn't hit me until now, but Waldo was the world's first hipster.
Think about it, round-rim glasses, beanie and striped sweater no matter the weather, old-school leather hiking boots and a retro camera. Waldo could basically be on the flag of Hipsteronia and be their version of Benjamin Franklin.
Yesterday's Have You Seen This?
I'm getting a little off track here, but this video has brought hipster Waldo into the future by showing off a robot built to find Waldo in any picture. Using face recognition and all sorts of science, the robot spots Waldo in seconds and then points him out.
Technology really is amazing. Hopefully, they create a machine next that helps me see the pictures in those "Magic Eye" books and maybe a robot that can finally tell me where in the world Carmen Sandiego is.
