Feds reject removal of 4 US Northwest dams in key report

A long-awaited federal report out Friday rejected the idea of removing four hydroelectric dams on a major Pacific Northwest river in a last-ditch effort to save more than a dozen species of threatened or endangered salmon, saying such a dramatic approach would destabilize the power grid, increase overall greenhouse emissions and more than double the risk of regional power outages.

A bill in Idaho that would ban any public money from going to organizations that provide abortions was approved by a panel of lawmakers despite opposition from some who said it didn't go far enough. The House State Affairs Committee sent the legislation to the full House Friday. Federal and state laws already ban public funding for abortion except for in certain circumstances, such as in cases of rape or incest or when the pregnancy endangers the mother’s life. But health care providers who perform abortions can receive public funding for other medical services.

A law firm that has challenged these birth certificate policies says only two other states block the changes. The Republican-dominated House voted 53-16 Thursday to pass the birth certificate measure that now goes to the GOP-controlled Senate. A federal judge scrapped a previous Idaho ban on birth certificate changes and warned against new rules. After the ruling, about 150 people over the next six months applied to change the gender on their birth certificates.

Two years after a man died in Idaho's Lake Coeur d’Alene, his wife has been charged with his murder. The Spokesman-Review reports search crews recovered the body of 68-year-old Larry Isenberg in March 2018, a month after he fell into the water during a boat ride. Court documents say Lori Isenberg is accused of planning to kill her husband by intentionally creating the situation in which he was submerged in the lake and died. She was booked into the Kootenai County Jail Monday night on suspicion of murder with a $2 million bond. It wasn't immediately known if she has a lawyer.
