WEST VALLEY CITY — A man believed to have a prior felony conviction in California was arrested late Monday after police say he broke into a West Valley residence.

Jerry Lee Alcarez, 39, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated burglary, two counts of aggravated assault, illegal discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, intoxication and disorderly conduct.

About 11:30 p.m., Alcarez illegally entered a West Valley residence, pointed a gun at two men inside and then pistol-whipped one man, according to a Salt Lake County Jail booking affidavit.

The other man took Alcarez outside and tried to calm him down while talking to him inside a car, said West Valley Police Lt. Shane Matheson. But during that conversation a shot was fired from inside the car, he said. No one was injured.

Alcarez then exited and drove home where police later found him.

“The suspect was intoxicated when officers made contact and caused a scene while in the patrol vehicle, causing unnecessary noise for residents in the area,” the arresting officer wrote in his affidavit.

Alcarez is believed to be a convicted felon out of California, the affidavit states. His relationship with the two other men was not immediately known.
