DRAPER — A woman died and a child was critically injured in a house fire in Draper early Tuesday, officials said.

Crews responded to a two-story log home near the intersection of 13800 South and Arrow Creek Drive about 12:45 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the upper story, according to Draper Fire Chief Clint Smith.

Five people were in the home — a mother, father, two children ages 6 and 10, and the father's mother.

The parents and children were outside the home when crews arrived but the man’s mother was initially unaccounted for. Crews then found her deceased inside the home, Smith said. She was later identified by fire officials as 61-year-old Shelly O’Meara. An autopsy was being completed to determine the exact cause of death.

The 6-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to an area hospital in critical condition with burns and inhalation injuries. The child's parents had minor injuries.

One police officer and one firefighter were taken to Lone Peak Hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion and overexertion.

"As you can tell, we've had some very high temperatures and it's just not cooling off very much at night," Smith said.

The home is located about 1000 feet down a dirt road off 13800 South. Crews had difficulty accessing the structure and getting a water supply established due to construction in the area, Smith said.

The cause of the fire has not been determined and no dollar amount of damage was initially provided.
