SALT LAKE CITY — Now that shooting high-quality video on smartphones is getting more and more common, the ability to edit that video on the same device is becoming more important.

The Pinnacle Studio Pro app from Luma Touch in Sandy aims to put powerful editing software right in the palm of your hand.

"(We) bring the true professional video editing capabilities that were a hallmark of Pinnacle Studio on the desktop and bring them to the iPad and the iPhone and still keep it easy to use," said Chris Demiris, managing partner for software development for Luma Touch. "We have recently added some new features that you won't find in any others like an audio mixer where you can do live audio mixing and see your audio levels while you're playing back."

The app also supports a dual view of a storyboard and a timeline to help in the editing process.

"When you first start working with your video, you can quickly drop in your videos and layout your story, just in the order of things that you want and then work your way down to the actual timing and cuts and getting it just the way you want it," Demiris said. "That's a little bit unique compared to any other app out there."

Users can also do an in-app purchase for various music soundtracks to accompany their video files to avoid running into copyright violations.

"They'll get music out of their library but then if they try to upload to YouTube or wherever they'll get a rights violation for it so having some music they can throw in is really nice," Demiris said.

Users have two apps on iOS to choose from when downloading. Luma Touch offers Pinnacle Studio for $2.99 or Pinnacle Studio Pro for $12.99. The company does not have any immediate plans to add apps on other platforms.

"Pinnacle Pro adds the audio mixer, the dual view trimmer, 2k and 4k support, and finally, it adds the ability to import and export (in bulk) both projects and media from different cloud storage," Demiris said. "Pinnacle Studio is a good starter app, it still has most of the power, is great for editing videos, but if you want the full power then go up to Pinnacle Pro that has all the nice pro features."

Demiris said the company plans to add filters and a second video track to the app in the near future.
