SUNDAY MORNING — There are many things one can do on a Sunday morning. Read a book. Listen to calming music. Jump rope on the way to church.
All of these are good options, and I've done most of them many times throughout my life. Jump roping on the way to church, however, is one I've never tried, but my inner 7-year-old self wishes I had. So, when I saw a video of Utahn Porter Ballard doing mad jump rope tricks in his suit and tie, I sat with my mobile device in hand and lived vicariously through each criss-cross, side-swing and backflip.
Did he actually do a backflip while jumping through a rope – in his Sunday best? Why, yes, he did.
Believe it or not, I used to be good at jump roping. My elementary PE teacher, Mr. Teppert, would turn on the song "Walking on Broken Glass" by Annie Lennox, and we would Jump Rope for Heart until our faces turned beet red. There was no broken glass included in the activities, except for the ones in my mind as the words ran through my head while I pretended I was jumping over sharp objects.
Watching people do really cool things that you might have been able to do in life has a way of making you feel bad about yourself, so I'll just smile at 7-year-old me and scroll through all of Ballard's videos during a relaxing Sunday morning.
