RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Gibson Brothers won entertainer of the year for a second straight year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday night as well as three other group and individual trophies.
Eric Gibson was named songwriter of the year and his New York-based quintet also won vocal group of the year and song of the year for "They Called it Music," written by Gibson and Joe Newberry. The Gibson Brothers also were the top winners at last year's Bluegrass Awards.
The awards were held in Raleigh, N.C., for the first time.
Della Mae won emerging artist, Junior Sisk and Claire Lynch won in the male and female vocalist categories and Balsam Range's "Papertown" was named album of the year. Tony Rice and Paul Warren were inducted into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.
More than a year after Earl Scruggs' death, IBMA voters showed they're still thinking about the banjo pioneer by naming "Foggy Mountain Rock," a cut from a tribute album to Scruggs, instrumental recorded performance of the year. The Boxcars were named instrumental group of the year and Marty Raybon won gospel recorded event for "Beulah Land."
Rob Ickes was named dobro player of the year, and extended his individual instrumentalist award record to 15 wins in that category. Adam Steffey of The Boxcars (mandolin), Jason Carter (fiddle), Bryan Sutton (guitar), Barry Bales (bass) and Mike Munford (banjo) also won instrumentalist of the year awards.
