SANDY -- Essay contest winners got a surprise visit in school Thursday.

Students from the Canyons School District wrote an essay about why the loved their city. The 1st place winners were seventh-grader Riley Frandsen and eighth-grader Katrina Jones, both from Indian Hills Middle School; and ninth-grader MacKenzie Tolk from Crescent View Middle School. They each won an iPod Nano, which was donated by R.C. Willey.

"We're working on featuring cities in a hyper-local way, really delving into what each city does," said Nelda McAllister. "So, what better way than to get students to report themselves on why each city is great?"

The students' articles will appear in the Deseret News next week.
