OREM -- Orem police are investigating a violent Sunday-morning home invasion, in which the victims turned the tables on the robber and critically injured him.
On Monday, the suspect was still in the hospital under sedation, while doctors treated him for serious stab wounds. He is expected to recover.
So far, the suspect is only being identified as a 22-year-old man from Provo.
On Sunday morning, Orem police were called to a home after it was reported that a man, armed with a shotgun, broke in around 7:15 and began stealing electronic devices. Four roommates in their early 20s woke up to find the man in the house and confronted him, armed with a knife.
The robber was stabbed several times and suffered a punctured lung along with wounds to his head, neck and back. Detectives have now interviewed the roommates, neighbors and other witnesses and are now waiting to speak to the suspect himself.
"We attempted to try to interview the suspect in the hospital, but he's pretty heavily sedated so we haven't been able to do that," said Orem police Sgt. Craig Martinez. "Right now, it is still being treated as a home burglary where the suspect was caught in the act by the four renters of the home. We hope to interview the suspect in the next couple of days."
Police plan to arrest the man as soon as he is discharged from the hospital. He will be facing charges of aggravated burglary, assault, theft and possession of stolen property.
Police do not believe the victims knew the suspect, but also aren't sure if the house was targeted at random. The investigation is still ongoing.
