Kimberly Houk reportingA close call for 40 scouts today after being trapped in the snow caves they were sleeping in. The Boy Scouts were camping in the Sinks area of Logan Canyon.

The boys and their leaders dug out the snow caves last night, in a canyon about 30 miles northeast of Logan.

But after several hours of high winds and blowing snow, the snow cornice, which is the molding between the top of the entrance of the cave and the ceiling, collapsed, completely covering the entrances to the caves. The cave itself did not collapse, and that protected the scouts during the three hours it took rescue crews to dig them out.

Just after 4 o'clock this morning... the Cache County Sheriff's Office started shoveling through the blowing snow... and fought winds gusting as high as 64 miles per hour... to free the trapped boys. No one was injured.
