SALT LAKE CITY — Starting Wednesday, there's a new opportunity to talk with Salt Lake City police officers. The department is launching meetings with the community each quarter.
The community meetings will be held at the Sorenson Unity Center, right off California at 900 West. At each meeting, the police department will have a different topic to discuss.
The Salt Lake City Police Department has hosted community meetings before, but this is somewhat of a relaunch under the new police chief.
Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., Chief Brian Redd will introduce himself at the department's first quarterly community meeting.
Department spokesman detective Michael Ruff said they intentionally chose a centralized location that's not a police facility for the gatherings.
The department will host the meetings on the first Wednesday of each quarter.
"We're always looking for that transparency and that open dialogue and communication," Ruff said. "It's always important to us to hear from the people that we are here to serve."
Ruff said the topics they choose to discuss depend on what the community members bring to them.
He said officers want to address situations or issues happening near schools, workplaces and in neighborhoods.
"We need that open communication," Ruff said. "We need to be able to answer those questions. We need to be able to find out what people need from us."
Ruff said each meeting will have an open forum portion where anyone can walk up and bring their questions or statements.
Anyone with a specific topic suggestion can email SLCPDOutreach@slc.gov.
